Inside a converted mill building in Pawtucket, a small furniture workshop has grown from taking local commissions to shipping handmade pieces to customers across the country. The owners, who started the business a decade ago building custom tables for neighbors, say the shift began when photographs of their work started circulating online.

The shop has kept its production small and deliberately slow, arguing that scale would compromise the joinery techniques that distinguish their furniture from mass-produced alternatives. They currently employ a handful of woodworkers, several trained through informal apprenticeships in the shop itself.

Staying Small on Purpose

The owners describe turning down opportunities to expand into a larger factory space, preferring instead to grow revenue through higher prices and longer wait times rather than higher volume.

They credit the Blackstone Valley's supply of affordable mill space with making the business viable in its early years, when margins were thin and larger commercial rents would have been prohibitive.
