Middletown Balances Suburban Growth With Rural Character
Aquidneck Island's fastest-growing town is debating zoning changes that would allow more housing near its town center.
Middletown, Aquidneck Island's fastest-growing town in recent years, is debating zoning changes that would allow more housing density near its town center while preserving the more rural character of its outlying farmland. The proposal has drawn a mix of support and concern at recent planning board meetings.
Supporters argue concentrating new housing near existing commercial areas would ease pressure on the town's remaining agricultural land, some of which has been protected through conservation easements. Opponents worry increased density could strain local schools and roads already handling growth from neighboring Newport.
Finding a Balance
Town planners describe the effort as an attempt to accommodate growth without repeating patterns seen elsewhere on the island, where suburban expansion has gradually reduced open space over several decades.
A final vote on the zoning changes is expected later this year following additional public hearings.
