East Providence Neighborhoods Debate the Future of the Waterfront
Residents are split over how much of the city's former industrial waterfront should become public parkland versus mixed development.
East Providence residents are debating competing visions for the city's former industrial waterfront, with some neighborhood groups pushing for the land to become predominantly public parkland while others favor mixed residential and commercial development that would generate ongoing tax revenue.
City planners say the site's size makes both outcomes technically feasible, but caution that the final balance will shape the neighborhood's character for decades. Public meetings on the matter have drawn larger-than-usual attendance in recent months.
Weighing the Options
Supporters of parkland-focused development point to the shortage of public waterfront access in the area, while development advocates argue the city needs the tax base a mixed-use project would provide to fund other municipal priorities.
City officials say they expect to present a preferred concept plan later this year following additional community input sessions.
