A New Generation of Fishermen Supplies Providence's Seafood Restaurants Directly

A small cooperative of Rhode Island fishermen has begun selling catch directly to Providence restaurants, bypassing traditional wholesale distribution in favor of same-day delivery arrangements with a handful of local kitchens. Organizers say the model gives fishermen a larger share of the final sale price while giving chefs more consistent access to specific, seasonal catch.

Chefs participating in the arrangement describe adjusting menus more frequently to reflect whatever comes in on a given day, a shift from the more standardized seafood ordering common with wholesale distributors.

Rebuilding a Local Supply Chain

Organizers say the cooperative remains small by design, serving a limited number of restaurant partners rather than scaling toward broader wholesale distribution, which they say would recreate the same margin pressures fishermen were trying to avoid.

Local food advocates describe the model as a meaningful, if modest, step toward strengthening the connection between Rhode Island's working waterfront and its restaurant industry.
